Post-Op Instructions for Multiple Tooth Extractions in Cincinnati, OH

Healing after multiple extractions can take more time than recovery after the removal of one or two teeth. At Queen City Oral Surgery, our oral surgeon and team want you to know that some bleeding, swelling and soreness are normal during the first few days. Careful home care can help protect the surgical areas, support comfort and encourage steady healing.

Bleeding and Immediate Care

A small amount of bleeding or oozing is expected after surgery. If bleeding continues, place clean gauze directly over the area and bite down with firm pressure for 30 minutes. You may need to repeat this a few times. If bleeding does not improve, avoid hot liquids, keep your head elevated and rest quietly. If you have an immediate denture, do not remove it unless bleeding becomes heavy or you are told to do so. Some oozing around the denture can be normal.

Swelling, Discomfort and Medication

Swelling often becomes more noticeable over the first two days after surgery. Some bruising or discoloration may also develop, sometimes even near the eyes. Use an ice pack on the outside of your face for 20 minutes each hour while awake during the first 36 hours. After that, warm moist heat may help improve comfort and reduce discoloration.

For mild discomfort, over-the-counter pain relief may be helpful if approved by our office. For stronger pain, take prescription medication exactly as directed. If pain does not begin to improve after two days or becomes worse, please contact our office. If an antibiotic was prescribed, complete the full course unless our office tells you otherwise.

Food, Fluids and Cleaning

Drink plenty of fluids after surgery. If many teeth were removed, staying hydrated is especially important. Try to drink several glasses of liquid during the first day. Choose soft foods and liquids that feel comfortable, then slowly return to a more normal diet as healing continues.

Please also follow these care steps:

  • Do not rinse your mouth on the first day or while bleeding is active.
  • After the first day, rinse gently with warm salt water every few hours and after meals.
  • Keep food particles away from the surgical areas as much as possible.
  • If you wear a denture, remove and rinse it several times a day after your adjustment visit.

Other Normal Symptoms and When to Call

Because several teeth were removed, your jawbone and gums may need more time to settle. You may notice a sore throat, cracked lips or a slight fever for the first day or two. Keeping your lips moist with ointment may help. If the fever continues, or if anything seems unusual during healing, please contact Dr. V. Russell Boudreau Jr., Dr. Scott L. Thatcher, or Dr. Jaspreet Singh.

If you received an immediate denture, sore spots may develop and may need adjustment soon after surgery. Contact us with any questions or concerns. Our oral surgeon and team are here to help you recover as comfortably as possible.
