Post-Op Instructions for Biopsies in Cincinnati, OH
Healing after a soft tissue or lip biopsy is usually smooth when the area is protected and home care directions are followed closely. At Queen City Oral Surgery, our oral surgeon and team want you to know that mild oozing, tenderness and swelling can be normal during the first day or two after surgery. Smoking, heavy activity and forceful rinsing can slow healing, so it is important to rest and give the site time to recover.
What to Expect After Your Procedure
A small amount of blood-tinged saliva is common during the first 24 hours. Dissolvable sutures may also loosen or come out as the tissue heals. In many cases, this is normal and does not mean there is a problem unless bleeding starts again. Some swelling may develop after surgery, and cool comfort measures such as ice chips can help soothe the area. If your lips feel dry or tight, a small amount of petroleum jelly or a similar ointment may help keep them comfortable.
Home Care Instructions
Please follow these guidelines to support healing:
- Do not smoke for 48 hours.
- Rest and avoid strenuous activity for the first two to three days.
- Do not drink through a straw.
- Avoid spicy foods for several days.
- Do not rinse your mouth during the first 24 hours.
- After 24 hours, rinse gently with warm salt water or a diluted mouthwash as directed.
- Continue normal oral hygiene, but avoid brushing directly over the surgical site.
- If bleeding increases, place clean gauze over the area and apply gentle pressure as instructed.
